Server switch

By now, the host of this site, Deerfield Hosting, should have completed the switch to the new server. If you posted a comment in the past couple of days, it probably got lost during the switch and you will have to post it again. (By the way, both Carol and I are quite pleased with Deerfield Hosting — excellent customer support, good price, almost no down time.)

About comments and blog policies

If you post comments to this blog, you may notice that certain comments do not appear immediately, but require moderation by me. If your comment does not appear right away, there’s a good chance that it got tagged for moderation — so please wait before you try posting it again. And if you think I’m taking too long to moderate your comment, feel free to send me email reminding me to moderate it soon.

For more information, see the page on “Blog policies,” under “Pages” in the menu at left.

New development

I claim that this blog is about “liberal religion, arts and culture, and sense of place.” But I realized that my definitions of these three things might not be your definitions. I’m also all too aware that I tend to write too much about certain personal passions (tpoics about which I am, as the Japanese say, a “maniakku”).

I’m working on adding pages that give my take on these four areas to orient new readers of the blog. But you regular readers should also note that you can leave comments on these pages, where you can argue with my definitions, which might prove to be a very interesting side conversation.

As with this whole blog, it’s all an experiment and it’s all evolving. (Actually, that’s true of the rest of life, too, isn’t it?)

New site, same blog

I got the new blog site up and running much more quickly than I had hoped. Therefore, as of right this very minute, all new posts will be on this blog. In addition, I have transferred the last ten posts to this site (and eventually, I will transfer most of the old posts to this site so you can use the search and indexing features on this site).

If you’re a regular reader, please two things now:

(1) Update the bookmark for this blog on your Web browser.

(2) If you subscribe to this blog, there’s an RSS feed available in the sidebar to the left of your screen –OR– if you prefer email notification of new posts, click on Email Notification here, or in the “About Me” section of the sidebar.

…and…

If you maintain a Web site or a blog, would you be so kind as to do one more thing?

(1) Update your blogroll or links page to the new address for this blog. Thank you!

Blog news

My partner Carol got sick of hearing me complain about AOL’s blog software, got sick of hearing me worry about the direction AOL is taking as a company. On Saturday she said, we’re going to get you another Web host tonight. So we did.

So now I’m in the process of setting up a new Web site and transferring this blog over to my new hosting service. It’s going to take a while for me to set up the new blogging software and transfer the blog archives over to the new site. I don’t expect to be done for a couple of months, so this blog sill remain active for a while yet. And when I do get the new site up and running, I promise to make the transition for you, the reader, as easy as I possible can.

Later note: and now at last this post is transferred to the new improved blog.

Housekeeping

from the old AOL blog…now you know why I switched to WordPress….

Recently, I’ve been hearing from readers that AOL will sometimes not allow you to post comments. Usually if you send them to me via email, I can post them — although last week my older sister was unable to post a comment, sent it to me via email, and not even I could post it. Alas, I am at the mercy of AOL’s blog software. I am slowly exploring other options for hosting this blog, but it will be months before I have time to finalize anything. Please bear with me in the mean time.

And, dear readers, thanks for your interest. I love hearing from you — you make writing this blog worth my while.

Minor redesign

You may notice that a few things are changing on this blog.

Changes so far:

  • I have been updating my main Web site, and changed this blog (as much as AOL lets me) to look more like the Web site.
  • Most links moved to a separate page, including all links to blogs. Moving these links allows me to annotate the links — besides which editing the list using AOL’s blog software was a nightmare.
  • Added one or two surprises.

A few other minor changes will appear in the next day or two, but most of my efforts right now are on the main Web site.

Update, November, 2005: Now moved from AOL to WordPress blogging software, hooray!
