Akhenaten: Well, Nefertiti, it’s official. Aten, the sun, is now the only god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nefertiti: Akhenaten, do you think this is a good idea?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Akhenaten: I am the Pharaoh. I can do anything I want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nefertiti: But the priests aren’t happy that you got rid of the other gods and goddesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Akhenaten: Too bad. There is only one god, and that god is the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nefertiti: Here comes the chief priest now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief priest: Excuse me, your highness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Akhenaten: Yes, what do you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief priest: Couldn’t we have one or two minor deities in addition to Aten?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Akehnaten: Hmmm. No! Aten is the only god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief priest: But people keep seeing images of the old gods around the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Akehnaten: Good point. We’ll build a new city, and everyone will move there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nefertiti [to chief priest]: Now see what you’ve done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief priest: Sorry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Akhenaten: Where’s the royal architect? Design a new city. We’ll call it “Horizon of the Sun.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Royal architect: Yes, your majesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Akhenaten: Where’s the Royal Building Contractor? Get fifty thousand slaves, and start building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Royal Building Contractor: Yes, your majesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Akhenaten: And be quick about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Royal Building Contractor: I’ll use that new technology where we use standard-size building stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Akhenaten: A new city for my new god. This is going to be great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nefertiti: You know what’s going to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Akhenaten: What?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nefertiti: As soon as you die, they’ll go back to the old gods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief priest: Hey, Royal Building Contractor. Come over here where the Pharaoh can’t hear us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Royal Building Contractor: Hi, Chief Priest. What can I do for you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief priest: The Pharaoh’s good for maybe another ten years. But as soon as he dies\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Royal Building Contractor: You want my crew to chisel out anything with the new god, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief priest: Let’s be ready to bring the old gods and goddesses back as soon as we can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
