These are puppets for acting out the story-within-the-story of the Buddhist Jataka tale &#8220;The Little Tree Spirit&#8221; (which you can read on my old blog <a href=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/blog\/?p=394\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need:<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppets.pdf\">patterns that you print and cut out ahead of time<\/a> <br \/>glue sticks or paste<br \/>scissors<br \/>pencils<br \/>black magic markers<br \/>paper bags (lunch bag size, 5 x 10 in. folded)<br \/>paper or card stock in the following colors:<br \/>\u2014pink (for noses and mouths)<br \/>\u2014white (for eyes)<br \/>\u2014dull green (for Little Tree Spirit)<br \/>\u2014bright green (for Great Tree Spirit)<br \/>\u2014orange (for Tiger)<br \/>\u2014yellow (for Lion\u2019s head)<br \/>\u2014brown (for Lion\u2019s mane)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start by seeing how the Tiger is made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(1) Cut out the head, attach it to the paper bag:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7894\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Trace the head shape from the patterns or draw it freehand on orange paper, then cut it out. Glue the head to what is the usually bottom of the paper bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(2) Add details to the head:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7895\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_2-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cut out the nose from pink paper, and two eyes from white paper. Glue on the eyes and nose, and draw pupils in the eyes. Using the black magic marker, draw stripes and whiskers on the tiger as shown above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(3) Add the mouth:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7896\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_3.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_3-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cut out the mouth, and fold it at about one third of the way across the diameter (about one inch from the edge). Glue the mouth in the flap formed by the bottom of the paper bag where it\u2019s folded over, as shown in the drawing. You want a little bit of the pink mouth to show below the head of the puppet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(4) Try your puppet:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_4-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_4-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_4-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_4.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Put your hand inside the puppet, and make sure the mouth looks right when you open and close the puppet&#8217;s mouth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(5) Make the other puppets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7899\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_5.jpg 512w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Tree_Spirit_Puppet_5-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 85vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of the puppets are made in much the same way. (1) For the Lion: use the same head pattern but cut the head out of yellow paper; then cut a mane out of brown paper and glue the head on the mane. (2) For the Little Tree Spirit: use the tree pattern and cut the tree out of green paper. (3) For the Great Tree Spirit: use the mane pattern, cutting the shape out of green paper for the &#8220;head.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you have all the puppets you need to act out the story.
