{"id":6777,"date":"2018-04-19T23:08:39","date_gmt":"2018-04-20T06:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/?p=6777"},"modified":"2018-04-19T23:18:04","modified_gmt":"2018-04-20T06:18:04","slug":"concord-hymn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/2018\/04\/concord-hymn\/","title":{"rendered":"Concord Hymn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sung at the Completion of the Battle Monument, April 19, 1836<\/p>\n<p>By the rude bridge that arched the flood,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Their flag to April&#8217;s breeze unfurled,<br \/>\nHere once the embattled farmers stood,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And fired the shot heard round the world.<\/p>\n<p>The foe long since in silence slept;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Alike the conqueror silent sleeps;<br \/>\nAnd Time the ruined bridge has swept<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Down the dark stream which seaward creeps.<\/p>\n<p>On this green bank, by this soft stream,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We set today a votive stone;<br \/>\nThat memory may their deed redeem,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When, like our sires, our sons are gone.<\/p>\n<p>Spirit, that made those heroes dare<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To die, and leave their children free,<br \/>\nBid Time and Nature gently spare<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The shaft we raise to them and thee.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Ralph Waldo Emerson<\/p>\n<p>One of the better poems Emerson wrote: simple and direct, and more complex than it seems at first; not unlike the five-minute battle which both the poem and the Battle Monument commemorate.
