Every once in a while, I come across a passage that is just so \u2014 so hard-boiled, that I have to read it twice to make sure it really says what I thought it said. Like this one, from <em>Gold Comes in Bricks<\/em> (1940) by Erle Stanley Gardner. :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-dark-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b4a8f89ad4a5b840dca15397c79bdd32\">\u201cI kissed her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-dark-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8191982e5f6bac1d9bac9b39bbe080b2\">\u201c\u2018To hell with that stuff,\u2019 she said. \u2018Really kiss me.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-dark-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-221c331e3f6209dadae060479705e4b1\">\u201cFifteen minutes later, the kid came up with the half case of Scotch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-dark-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a2d4fa343693cfe282ff4cbcaa3ba54d\">\u201cI showed up at Ashbury&#8217;s place about two o&#8217;clock in the morning. I still couldn&#8217;t get the girl&#8217;s hair out of my mind. I thought of that strand of the hangman&#8217;s rope every time I thought of the way the light glinted along those blonde tresses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will never look at blonde hair again in quite the same way.
