But butterfly enthusiasts point out that some butterflies prefer &#8220;mud puddling&#8221;: they are attracted to mud puddles, and like to hang out there.<\/p>\n<p>Carol and I went for a walk in Purisima Creek Redwoods preserve. In places the trail was still damp and even muddy, and in one such place, on a boundary between chaparral and Douglas fir forest, I saw an Echo Blue fluttering along. The trail wasn&#8217;t exactly muddy, but I guess it was damp enough, for the insect would light every now and then, put its wings up, and bask.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BlogJun0316.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BlogJun0316.jpg\" alt=\"BlogJun0316\" width=\"1029\" height=\"772\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5697\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BlogJun0316.jpg 1029w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BlogJun0316-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BlogJun0316-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BlogJun0316-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BlogJun0316-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I got too close, it unfolded its wings, revealing its attractive bright blue upper surfaces, and flew quickly away, staying close to the trail. I never once saw it go near a flower; so simple observation happened to disprove a stereotype generated by common wisdom. On the other hand, sometimes common wisdom is right.
