We spent some time looking at native pollinators, of which my favorite was a bumble bee (<em>Bombus<\/em> sp.) working the blossoms on Purple Loosestrife and goldenrod:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/BlogJul1715.jpg\" alt=\"BlogJul1715\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/BlogJul1715.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/BlogJul1715-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 85vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It reminded me of Ralph Waldo Emerson&#8217;s poem about bumble bees, called &#8220;The Humble Bee.&#8221; When I got home I looked up the poem; it wasn&#8217;t as good as I had remembered, but I did like the fourth stanza, which captures something of the flavor of a warm July day in New England:<\/p>\n<p>Hot midsummer&#8217;s petted crone,<br \/>\nSweet to me thy drowsy tune,<br \/>\nTelling of countless sunny hours,<br \/>\nLong days, and solid banks of flowers,<br \/>\nOf gulfs of sweetness without bound<br \/>\nIn Indian wildernesses found,<br \/>\nOf Syrian peace, immortal leisure,<br \/>\nFirmest cheer and bird-like pleasure&#8230;. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Abs and I went for a walk in Great Meadows in Concord, Mass.
