A couple of evenings ago, Carol and I happened to be walking along the platform of the San Mateo Caltrain station on our way home. A woman sat on one of the benches, talking on her cell phone while waiting for a train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTell her that you\u2019re not going to have to talk with the D.A.,\u201d she said in a clear, penetrating voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the next bench over, another woman huddled into her jacket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo, tell her that the D.A. isn\u2019t going to press charges,\u201d she said, louder this time. \u201cJust tell her that, OK?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
