Rosy-fingered dawn
\nappeared in the east
\nto find neither bird
\nnor beast yet awake.
\nLast night’s candle still
\nburned, small and steady,
\nin the window, there
\nto guide something home.
\nI yawned, listened
\nto the holiday
\nstillness, felt the cold,
\nput on the teapot.
\nI’m pessimistic:
\nI don’t believe that
\npeace on earth, good will,
\nor even much love
\nwill ever come to
\nthis generation,
\nnor to their children;
\njust wars and hatred.
\nBut still it happens:
\nRosy-fingered dawn
\ncomes again, starts us
