Delos O\u2019Brian of the American Unitarian Association holds the first meeting of the emerging congregation; some present at the first meeting were members of the old&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.danielharper.org\/yauu\/2021\/11\/timeline-of-palo-alto-unitarians-1891-1950\/\">Unitarian Church of Palo Alto<\/a><br \/>1947 \u2014 Rev. Nat Lauriat, minister in San Jose, drives up each week to preach in Palo Alto<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1948 \u2014 The first Sunday school is a cooperative venture with Palo Alto Friends Meeting; former Unitarian Josephine Duveneck is one of the teachers<br \/>1948 \u2014 The new congregation applies for membership in the American Unitarian Association (AUA) as the&nbsp;<strong>Palo Alto Unitarian Society<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1949 \u2014 From April through June,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uudb.org\/articles\/lonraycall.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rev. Lon Ray Call,<\/a>&nbsp;extension minister from the AUA, serves the new congregation; membership more than doubles<br \/>1949 \u2014 After Nat Lauriat turns them down, the congregation calls Rev. Felix Danford Lion as minister; Lion arrives in September<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1950 \u2014 Services are held at the Palo Alto Community Center<br \/>1950 \u2014 PAUS hold first Flower Communion service<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1951 \u2014 The congregation changes its name to the&nbsp;<strong>Palo Alto Unitarian Church<\/strong>&nbsp;(PAUC)<br \/>1951 \u2014 The congregation purchases a house for Rev. Dan Lion and his family to live in<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1952 \u2014 Following the lead of the Los Angeles Unitarian church, PAUC refuses to sign&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McCarthyism#Repression_in_the_individual_states\" target=\"_blank\">California\u2019s \u201cLoyalty Oath,\u201d<\/a>and has to pay state tax even though it\u2019s a nonprofit<br \/>1952 \u2014 The Forum is started by Dr. Robert C. North of Stanford, for open discussion of controversial questions of the day<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1953 \u2014 PAUC, the San Jose Unitarian church, and the Los Gatos Unitarian Fellowship form a dental loan fund to aid children of migrant workers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1954 \u2014 PAUC purchases property at 505 Charleston Rd. for $30,060 [$300,000 in 2020 dollars]<br \/>1954 \u2014 Women\u2019s Alliance raises $1,326 for PAUC [$13,000 in 202 dollars]<br \/>1954 \u2014 A second service is added at 9:30 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/paloaltocre.files.wordpress.com\/2021\/12\/dan-lion-at-lucie-stern-ctr.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/paloaltocre.files.wordpress.com\/2021\/12\/dan-lion-at-lucie-stern-ctr.jpeg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-183502\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rev. D. Roen \u201cBud\u201d Repp becomes assistant minister; Rev. Freedom Summer),<\/a>&nbsp;and is supported by PAUC<br \/>1964 \u2014 100 junipers are planted in front of the Main Hall<br \/>1964 \u2014 Minister\u2019s study is added to the rear of the office building<br \/>1964 \u2014 PAUC gives $2,000 [$17,000 in 2020 dollars] to the Redwood City Fellowship so they can hire a minister<br \/>1964 \u2014 Rev. Dan Lion officiates at a wedding ceremony for musicians&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mimi_Fari%C3%B1a\" target=\"_blank\">Mimi Baez<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Fari%C3%B1a\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Fari\u00f1a<\/a>&nbsp;(they had been legally married in Paris a few months before)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1965 \u2014 PAUC supports Rev. Dan Lion\u2019s trip to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Selma_to_Montgomery_marches\" target=\"_blank\">Selma, Ala.<\/a><br \/>1965 \u2014 Mike Young becomes assistant minister; congregation ordains and installs him in November<br \/>1965 \u2014 Congregation votes to investigate the possibility of building a larger church building at the front of the lot<br \/>1965 \u2014 Nationwide, Unitarian Universalism stops growing and begins declining around about 1965<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1966 \u2014 PAUC sells 2.2 acres to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/stevensonhouse.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stevenson House elderly housing community<\/a>&nbsp;at below market rates, then gives Stevenson House a $5,000 donation [$405,000 in 2020 dollars]<br \/>1966 \u2014 Activism against the Vietnam War<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1967 \u2014 Clarice Gault hired as new Director of Religious Education<br \/>1967 \u2014 Revs. Dan Lion and Mike Young provide counseling to conscientious objectors<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1968 \u2014 Congregation votes to not build a new church building, and instead votes to spend the money on \u201chuman rights\u201d programs (however, some voted against building because they thought the design was ugly)<br \/>1968 \u2014 Rev. Mike Young resigns as of Dec. 31, 1968, and is not replaced<br \/>1968 \u2014 Stevenson House construction is completed, including the bridge linking Stevenson House with PAUC<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/paloaltocre.files.wordpress.com\/2021\/12\/pauc-mike-young.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/paloaltocre.files.wordpress.com\/2021\/12\/pauc-mike-young.jpeg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-183500\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rev. Dan Lion and other Unitarians participate in anti-war march in downtown Palo Alto<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1970 \u2014 PAUC forms a nonprofit corporation to start an alternative high school, called &#8220;Lothlorien High School&#8221;<br \/>1970 \u2014 Ron Garrison hired as \u201cYouth Minister\u201d<br \/>1970 \u2014 The congregations declines to invest in Black Affairs Council bonds<br \/>1970 \u2014 Rae Bell resigns as children\u2019s choir director<br \/>1970 \u2014 Congregation declines to add &#8220;Universalist&#8221; to its name, at the requests of Universalists in the congregation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1971 \u2014 PAUC establishes a day care center,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/paccc.org\/centers\/preschool_centerss\/6-ellen_thacher_childrens_center_etcc?date=2014-04-01\" target=\"_blank\">still in existence,<\/a>which is named after the recently deceased Ellen Thacher<br \/>1971 \u2014 PAUC calls Rev. Dr. Ron Hargis as minister of religious education<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1972 \u2014 Rev. Dan Lion resigns; Rev. Ron Hargis becomes sole minister until Rev.
