You can sing it to any Common Meter tune, although it goes well with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com\/Hymns_and_Carols\/MIDI\/King_Shall_Come_196.mid\">Consolation<\/a> (no. 53 in <em>Singing the Living Tradition<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>I tried to keep my interpretation of the KJV text to a minimum. So before you ask, yes, the original text mentions boughs, branches, and palms, and the fact that they remembered their last feast which they spent hiding out in the mountains. It&#8217;s easy to forget how weird some of these Bible stories are. I did add the references to freedom and to tyranny, though I feel they are implicit in the story; ditto the reference to the curs\u00e9d idols.<\/p>\n<p><del datetime=\"2010-12-03T01:14:32+00:00\">1. When Maccabeus and his band<\/del><br \/>\n<del datetime=\"2010-12-03T01:14:32+00:00\">Did free Jerusalem,<\/del><br \/>\n<del datetime=\"2010-12-03T01:14:32+00:00\">When they did cast the tyrant out,<\/del><br \/>\n<del datetime=\"2010-12-03T01:14:32+00:00\">&#8216;Twas God who guided them.<\/del><\/p>\n<p>1. Good Maccabeus and his band:<br \/>\nThey freed Jerusalem.<br \/>\nThey cast the wicked tyrant out,<br \/>\nFor God was guiding them.<\/p>\n<p>2. The altars which the heathen built<br \/>\nOut in the public square,<br \/>\nThey pulled them down, and then destroyed<br \/>\nThe curs\u00e9d idols there.<\/p>\n<p>3. They cleansed the temple, kindled flame,<br \/>\nGave thanks they now were free.<br \/>\nThey then besought God keep them safe<br \/>\nFrom barb&#8217;rous tyranny.<\/p>\n<p>4. They celebrated eight glad days,<br \/>\nRememb&#8217;ring their last feast,<br \/>\nWhich they had held in mountain dens<br \/>\nWhere they had lived like beasts.<\/p>\n<p>5.
