The subway car emptied out after Central Square. A man moved to take one of the many empty seats next to me, and started talking to his friend across the aisle. This short unhurried exchange caught my ear:<\/p>\n

“Hey. Thanks for [unintelligible]. I’ll do the same for you next weekend.”<\/p>\n

“Next weekend…. Next weekend I could be in jail.”<\/p>\n

“Yah, but if I don’t drink….” [pause]<\/p>\n

“Yah but I been busted sober.”<\/p>\n

“But if ya don’t drink….”<\/p>\n
